SMAT creates a hybrid marketplace and serves as a bridge between traditional and digital assets by enabling the tokenization of a wide range of real-world securities. Traditional assets such as private debt, private equity infrastructure or precious metals will be represented digitally on the SMAT platform through tokenization (Hileman and Rauchs, 2017). Thereby, integrating the DeFi ecosystem to unlock new capital.
The SMAT system enables physical real-estate assets to become asset-backed security ERC-20 tokens. ERC-20 guidelines create the possibility of asset ownership transferability between participants in the ecosystem. SMAT achieves asset tokenization through the stages outlined below:
Selection of asset representation model
Modeling of asset
Technical and security code
Deployment
After the choice of an asset is agreed upon and internal agreements have been made among relevant parties, a smart contract needs to be established between stakeholders. In deploying the smart contract, SMAT ensures that the terms reflect the agreed conditions between the parties involved, as well as reflect the state legal framework for securities, before transactions occur (Kocaoglu, Mezzetti, Surianinova and Titon, 2021).
